Ball cap styling with adjustable band, ponytail cut-out, and exaggerated visor. Cute and comfy in medium wt. cotton. You may want to make more than one!
Materials:
Yarn - Medium wt cotton such as Cotton Classic by Tahki, Clip by Klaus Koch, or Provence by Classic Elite, 175 yards. (Model shown in Provence.)

Needles - 16" circular and double-point needles, US size 4 (3.5mm), or size needed to obtain gauge.

Other - Tapestry needle.

Gauge: 21 sts and 28 rows = 4" (10cm) in stockinet st

Measurements: Finished crown depth is 6-1/2"; adjustable to fit 21" to 24" circumference.

Instructions:

Cap: Cast on 100 sts and work 6 rows in stockinet st. Continuing in stockinet st, work an increase row on each of the next 5 right side rows, as follows: k2, kfb (knit in the front and back of the stitch), knit to last 3 sts, kfb, k2. Purl one row, casting on 10 stitches at the end of the row (120 sts total). Join in a round. Place marker. Knit 2 rounds, ending the second round five stitches before the marker. Move the marker, or place a new marker, here (5 stitches to the right of the old marker). Begin crown shaping.

Crown shaping: (Switch to double-point needles when reduction in sts makes it necessary.) Round 1: *k2tog, k16, ssk, rep from * to end. Round 2 and all even rounds: knit. Rounds 3 through 15: Work as for round 1, knitting 2 less stitches between the decreases on each decrease round. Round 17: *k2tog, ssk, rep from * to end. Break yarn and draw through remaining sts. Pull up and weave in end.

Band: The band is worked, back and forth, in seed stitch (k1, p1 across, on every row). With right side facing, pick up and knit 99 stitches along lower edge. Work 3 rows even. Next row: Work 80 sts, wrap next st and turn. Work back for 62 sts, wrap next st and turn. Work back for 52 sts, wrap next st and turn. Work back 42 sts, wrap next st and turn. Work to end, working the wraps with their corresponding sts as you come to them. Turn and work across the entire row, working the wraps with their corresponding sts as you come to them. Bind off 12 sts (in knit); knit to the last 13 sts; bind off 13 sts; cut yarn.

Visor: The visor in worked (back and forth) in stockinet st, with edge decreases on every row, as follows: Edge decreases: wrong side - p2tog together, work to last 2 sts, ssp (slip, slip, purl together); right side - k2tog, work to last 2 sts, ssk (slip, slip, knit together). Increases are made by knitting in the stitch below and then in the stitch on the needle.

Purl one row (remembering to decrease at edges). Work first increase row, as follows: Place markers 5 sts in from each end; work decrease and knit to marker; increase between markers - *inc, k2, repeat from * to end marker (knitting any extra sts); knit to end and work end decrease. Remove markers. Work 7 rows in stockinet st (remembering to decrease at edges). Work second increase row: Place markers 12 sts in from each end; work as for first increase row. Remove markers. Work 7 rows in stockinet st (remembering to decrease at edges). Work third increase row: Place markers 16 sts in from each end; work decrease and knit to marker; increase between markers - *inc, k3, repeat from * to end marker (knitting any extra sts); knit to end and work end decrease. Remove markers. Work 7 rows in stockinet st (remembering to decrease at edges). Bind off row: k2tog, bind off to last 2 sts, ssk, bind off the last st.

Finishing: With right side facing, pick up and knit sts around the ponytail cut-out. Work a 3-st attached I-cord(on-site demo) around this opening. With right side facing, pick up and knit sts around the bottom edge of the hat and visor. (Note: Pick up one stitch for every stitch as you work around the edge. The visor will not hang properly if this edge pulls in!) Work a 6" length of 4-st I-cord(on-site demo), then slip the 4 I-cord sts onto the needle holding the picked up sts, with the working yarn end next to the picked up sts. Work a 4-st attached I-cord around the hat and visor, ending by working another 6" of unattached I-cord. Weave in ends and block.

Tie a square knot in the I-cord at a comfortable fit.
