Quick to knit and fun to wear. Vary the size by varying gauge. Written to fit average woman's hands.
Yarn - ~125 yds. worsted wt plain or novelty yarn, or a plain yarn with a knit-along yarn added for cuffs.
Needles - 4 double-point needles, US size 7 (4.5mm), or size needed to obtain gauge.
Other - Stitch markers; small stitch holder; tapestry needle.
Gauge: 20 sts and 26 rows = 4" (10 cm) in stockinet st.
Instructions: (make 2)
With double-point needles, cast on 36 sts.
Divide evenly on 3 needles and join in a round.
Purl one round; knit one round; purl one round (garter cuff).
Knit for 9 rounds in stockinet st (knitting every round).
Shape thumb gusset:
Place markers between stitches 17 and 18 and between stitches 19 and 20 (2 sts between markers).
Work an increase round: Knit to marker, slip marker, knit in front and back (kfb) of first st, knit to last st before second marker, kfb, slip marker, knit to end of round.
Work an increase round every 4th round 4 times more (12 sts between markers).
Work one round even.
Next round: Knit to marker, place next 12 sts on a small stitch holder, cast on 2 sts, knit to end of round.
Work even in stockinet st for 10 rounds more.
Purl one round; knit one round; purl one round.
Bind off loosely in knit.
Thumb: Replace sts from stitch holder. Knit one row; purl one row; knit 4 rows. Bind off loosely in knit. Sew thumb seam and seam at inside of thumb and hand.
Work second mitten to match.
